Washington, D.C. – June 4, 2025

The Edible Oil Producers Association (EOPA) and our members support the effort to improve health in the United States and around the world. Dietary fat is one of the three macronutrients all humans need to survive, and many edible fats and oils are a source of essential fatty acids the body needs but cannot produce on its own. EOPA’s members have a long history of providing safe dietary fat options that Americans and global consumers can chose based on their individual health needs, budgets, cultural backgrounds, and taste preferences. These options include, but are not limited to, canola, coconut, cottonseed, lard, palm, palm kernel, peanut, safflower, sunflower, soybean, tallow, and wheat germ oils.

The edible fats and oils sector prioritizes the safety of the food we produce as well as the food supply. We use rigorous and systematic monitoring and controls to ensure all food and worker safety requirements, good manufacturing practices, and energy efficiency and environmental requirements governing each facility are met.

EOPA agrees with the sentiment foundational to the Make America Health Again (MAHA) efforts: We should take seriously the rise of chronic disease in the U.S. We should harness the new and impassioned energy to find ways to improve health in America. We should use the power and process of the Scientific Method to continue to expand and deepen knowledge.

To make America healthy, scientific assessments, regulations, and policy must be based on the totality of evidence from the current body of science.

This current and far-reaching scientific evidence demonstrates that all fats and oils options made by EOPA members are safe and each provides a unique nutrient package which can fulfill various dietary needs.

EOPA also supports the important goal of ensuring Americans can make informed choices about what to feed themselves and their families. These health and dietary decisions must be based on the totality of evidence from the current body of science.

It becomes increasingly difficult for Americans to make informed decisions about their health and dietary choices when they are presented with inaccurate or incomplete information about the safety and scientifically demonstrated health impacts of different food options.

EOPA’s members are committed to continuing to provide safe options to the U.S. food supply, the safest, most abundant, most affordable food supply in the world. EOPA is also dedicated to ensuring policymakers and private citizens alike have access to the widest body of current science on food safety and health effects. We welcome the opportunity to continue to work with policymakers and stakeholders to improve health across America and around the world.
